About Edward Waters
Remaining but a short time in the New World, Edward returned to England, and came once again in 1609 with Sir Thomas Gates, and Sir George Somers on the ship, Sea Venture. The ship wrecked while en route to Virginia on the "vexed Bermuther" (Bermuda) Island. The following year, in May, 1610, the shipwrecked colonists continued on their way to Virginia. However, Edward Waters and Christopher Carter remained to hold possession of the little island, which they had named, "Somers Islet."When Governor Moore returned to England in 1612, he appointed Edward a member of the Governors' Council to rule the Bermudas during the Governors absence. Six years later, Edward Waters set sail for his original destination and settled on the south bank of the James River. This same year, 1618, Lady Grace O'Neil landed in the Virginia Colony at the age of fifteen. Four years later she married Edward Waters.
In the massacre of 1622, Waters and his family consisting of his wife and infant son, William, were captured by the Nansemond Indians. They were rescued and taken to Elizabeth City, now called Hampton. Their other child, Margaret, was born in 1625 when Edward was 41 years old.
One hundred acres of land was patented to Edward when "James Cittie" was incorporated on August 24, 1624. Governor Potts of Virginia appointed Edward Commissioner for the district between South Hampton River and Fox Hill about 1628. Edward was also a member of the county Court, the House of Burgesses, a Lieutenant and then a Captain in the Virginia Militia. He was a Commissioner and Commander of Elizabeth City County, Virginia. He was a member of the Church of England, and was on the building committee and a warden at the time of his capture by the Indians.
He returned to England on business in 1630 and died at Great Hornmead, Hertfordshire, England. He left his family a large estate in Virginia, Ireland, England, and according to his will which was probated on September 18, 1630, land "elsewhere".
